Thackray Museum of Medicine
The Thackray Museum of Medicine hosts half-term screenings of this Pixar robot classic. Shows take place Wednesday 23 February and Sunday 26 February 2022.
In conjunction with our Can Robots Care?exhibition, and as part of their half-term Bot Bonanza, Thackray will host special screenings of Wall-E! You are invited to come dressed as a robot for a chance to win the ‘Best Dressed Bot’ Competition, awarded before each screening.

Alice Cares + panel conversation

Can robots care? What are the implications of the using care robots to assist older populations?
Alice Cares is an acclaimed documentary film, directed by Sander Burger. The film follows the relationships between the care robot Alice and the women she works with.
Following the screening, there was a panel conversation, exploring the issues raised in the film.
The panel included Dr Anouk van Maris, Professor Gail Mountain and Dr Yugin Teo and is chaired by Dr Jade French. Short clips from the film also appear in our exhibition Can Robots Care?

Stanisław Lem Shorts; Roly Poly + panel conversation

Leeds International Film Festival and Polish Cultural Institute

To mark the centenary of the science fiction writer Stanislaw Lem, we presented this tribute in collaboration with the Polish Cultural Institute and Leeds International Film Festival. Legendary stop motion animators the Quay Brothers appeared in person to present their new short film primer, 11 Preliminatory Orbits Around Planet Lem, alongside Maska, a beautiful adaptation of one of his short stories made in 2010. Also screened was another rarely screened Lem adaptation, Roly Poly made by the renowned Polish director Andrzej Wajda in 1968.
Roly Poly is a short, comic sci-fi film, based on a script by sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem.
A panel discussion followed the film, including contributions from the Quay Brothers, Dr Amy C. Chambers and Professor Stuart Murray, chaired by Simon Ings.
